Duell, Sloan and Pearce

The publishing firm of Duell, Sloan and Pearce was founded in New York in 1939 by C. Halliwell Duell, Samuel Sloan and Charles A. Pearce. In 1961 the firm was acquired by Meredith Publishing Company. According to 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 46 (1986), Meredith retired Duell, Sloan and Pearce as an imprint in 1967. According to John Tebbel: 'A history of book publishing in the United States', Volume IV (1981), all rights in Duell, Sloan and Pearce titles were purchased from Meredith in 1969 by Hawthorn Books. Drexel Biddle

The publishing firm of Drexel Biddle and Bradley was founded in Philadelphia in 1895 by Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle and Alexander Bradley. From 1897 the firm became known as Drexel Biddle. Dragonfly Books is a long-established imprint of Alfred A. Knopf. See the FOB entry for Knopf, which indicates that the firm was purchased by Random House in 1960. The Doves Press was founded by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson in 1899 and remained in his personal ownership. The Doves Press went out of existence in 1916, when Cobden-Sanderson famously threw all the firm's type into the River Thames.

Doubleday & Company

In 1897 Frank Nelson Doubleday and Samuel McClure founded the publishing house of Doubleday & McClure. From 1900 the firm became Doubleday, Page & Company. In 1927 Doubleday merged with the George H. Doran Company and became Doubleday, Doran. The firm was renamed Doubleday & Company in 1946. Doubleday & Company was purchased by Bertelsmann in 1986, and is now a division of Random House. Dodd, Mead and Company

The predecessor firm of Dodd, Mead and Company was Taylor and Dodd (q.v.). From the 1870s the firm was run by Edward S. Mead and adopted the name of Dodd, Mead and Company. The following quotation is from the catalogue of the archives of Dodd, Mead and Company in the University of Delaware Library: "The business operations of Dodd, Mead and Company were suspended in March 1989 pending the outcome of arbitration with its fulfillment house, Metro Services Inc. By the end of 1990 the company ceased publications."

On the retirement of Rector Fox in 1906, the firm became known as Duffield and Company. After Horace Green became company president in 1926, the firm changed its name again to Duffield and Green.
